Superstitions to ponder
Bacon ~ In some area’s bacon is credited with certain healing powers, but only if it has been stolen rather than acquired legitimately.
Coffee ~ Much can be made by observing the movement of bubbles on the surface of a cup of coffee. If the bubbles float towards the drinker, prosperous times lie ahead; if the retract, hard times are promised.
Egg ~ When collecting eggs, care should be taken in carrying them.
Break an egg, break your leg;
Break three, woe is thee;
Break two, your love's true.
Hiccups ~ If a person suffers an attack of hiccups this is an indication that someone is thinking about you, possibly unkindly.
Initials ~ Usually parents take care that when naming a child that the initials don't spell an unfortunate word. Yet, superstition notes this is not necessary; anyone who boasts initials that spell a word of any kind is deemed very lucky and is sure to become rich and famous.
Knee ~ Superstition holds that an itchy knee is a sign of the owner of the knee being jealous of someone.
Lettuce ~ There are many superstitious beliefs surrounding lettuce. It is supposed to prevent drunkenness, at wedding it is believed to be an aphrodisiac and used in many love potions. You ladies eating plenty of lettuce should have no problems bearing children. And wild lettuce is used to treat insomnia and headaches,
Mosquito ~ Are welcomed in the bedroom of sick person on the grounds that, as they fly out again, they will take the illness with them. They are also weather indicators, if they fly low to the ground, rain is coming, but if they fly high in the air with will be fine.
Onion ~ There are a host of superstitions about the onion, not least in the lore of love. Placing an onion under the pillow is recommended for those who wish to see their future partner in their dreams.
Plantain ~ Wrap two bare spokes of the plant in a dock leaf or placing them under a stone and leaving them overnight; if they blossom in the morning, this is a sign that a love affair will prosper.
Robin ~ The robin ranks among the most sacred of all garden birds and enjoys the special protection of superstition. Killing a robin, the person will suffer an immediate and lasting decline in their fortune and harming a robin, the individual will suffer a parallel hurt. Breaking a robin's egg will lead to the destruction of the perpetrator's most valued possession. A more cheerful tradition holds that a person can make a wish when they see their first robin of the year, but they must take care to complete their wish before the bird flies away.
If a robin sings in the bush,
Then the weather will be coarse;
But if a robin sings in the barn,
Then the weather will be warm.
Toad ~ Of course the toad is widely associated with witchcraft and has a mixed reputation. In some circumstances it is a lucky creature, whose appearance means the end of a drought and general good fortune, possibly in the form of unexpected wealth. It is thought to be particularly lucky is a toad crosses the path of a bride on her way to church, as this means that the union will be both prosperous and happy. 😊
