Grocery store workout

At some point in time, we’ve visited a grocery store and experienced the mental and cardio workout we call grocery shopping.

Over the course of a week or so we compiled a list of what we would like to purchase, taking future meal preparation into account. Cart in hand, recycle bags stored safely underneath ~ let the grocery store workout begin. As you cruise through the grocery store think of how many times you may ponder which item to purchase, pick up, bend over, lift or lug something all the while pushing a cart that is only going to get heavier as you go up and down the food lined isles.

There are decisions to be made:

  • Which of the 10 different brands do I want? So many times, I look at different items, make my decision yet I place the wrong item in my cart ~ I hate it when that happens.

  • Which is better for us ~ more or less of fiber, fat, sugar, carbs or sodium? It seems if you go for less of one, you get more of another ~ no easy balance.

  • Which costs less? The price is based on per average of item weight vs. price per ounce, minus the can, plus the 10% more? I am so confused, which is the better deal?

  • Whole, 2%, low fat, reduced fat or fat free ~ not sure the difference between low fat and reduced fat, possibly they lower the amount of fat vs. the reduction in the fat input - I don't know.

  • Why do they place 6 ounces of food in a 12-ounce bag? To make us think we're getting more ~ we're not fooled, everyone knows that bag of chips is only half full.

  • Organic, cage free, grass fed, vine ripened ~ I think it's a matter of opinion on which one we may prefer to consume.

  • Cereal ~ does that mean Cheerios, Raisin Bran or Captain Crunch? Why can't they be more specific when adding something to the list.

  • Toilet paper or paper towels ~ Strong, softer, quilted, multi sizes, septic safe, double, mega, biodegradable? Alex I'll take stronger and softer for $30.00 - please.

How does one decide the best way to cruise the 30,000 to 48,000 square feet of a grocery store?

  • If we start in the produce section our brain will be stimulated by all the pretty colors, we may end up buying more than we need plus our fruits and veggies will be at the bottom of the cart ~ they could get squished.

  • If we start in the dairy section our brain may not be as stimulated but our cold goods will be in the cart for a longer period of time ~ they could get warm or melt.

  • When you have that cart movin' and you turn the corner two things happen: You can't see if another cart is coming and it's hard to stop that cart when it's in motion.

We try to stay on task by purchasing only items on our list as we are engaging in our grocery store workout ~ which goes something like this:

  • Push a cart that gets heavier with each passing aisle

  • Shelf to cart

  • Cart to grocery belt

  • Bagged and back into cart

  • Cart to vehicle

  • Vehicle to countertop

  • Countertop to the items preferred storage place

  • Fold recycle bags and place them back in your vehicle or place your plastic bags in a spot to recycle them the next time you visit the grocery store.

Once we’re home, everything is put in its place and we are completely exhausted from our grocery store workout, we hear it… one of those two annoying phrases...

  • Is there anything to eat?

  • There's nothing here to eat.
