Treasures in the junk drawer

Every home has one and it's usually in the kitchen ~ a 'junk' drawer. It's the place where those things we aren't quite sure what to do with find a home. Yes, a home because they tend to live there forever since we never truly go through and clean out the ‘junk’ drawer. Sure, we move things around to make space for more 'junk', but do we throw anything away? Obviously, I didn't.

I went through and cleaned out my junk drawer the other day. Not because I'm miss tidy, no OCD tendencies, I'm getting new kitchen cabinets and had to clean out my 'junk' drawer. It was amazing some of the things I found there ~ gum, keys, chargers, paint samples, straws, yet the one item that got me were all the recipes. This is on top of my cookbook cabinet, that's another story 😊 I figured it was now or never so, I went through all those recipes I had stashed in my 'junk' drawer over the years, and I mean years. Lots of newspaper clipped recipes ~ Kitchen Korner, Cooking with Connie, Savory Seafood, recipes of the week and just plan clippings. Do newspapers still have recipes? 📰 There were the recipes from the grocery stores, their 'Helpful Cooking Hints' or Meals in Minutes. You were supposed to collect them and place them in a ~ build your own cookbook, not stash them in your 'junk' drawer. Earlier I mentioned the word years, it applies to my next find, newspaper recipes from 1966. So, I'm wondering... were mom and I looking through the newspaper, I saw the picture of food and wanted it, or did mom see it, cook it and pass it along to me? Nonetheless, I still have them. My favorite treasures were the recipes I found in mom's handwriting. It didn't matter if I couldn't read her handwriting or that there may be no units of measuring, they were mom's recipes ~ in her own handwriting 😊

The subject of a 'junk' drawer brings me to this question... With all our modern technologies, why do we still have junk drawers? Is it because we all have some small form of OCD, everything needs to have a home, a place where it can reside ~ even if it is in the ‘junk’ drawer? Whatever the reason, I'm thankful for my 'junk' drawer and the treasures I found ~ that I proudly display on my kitchen wall 😊
